1. What is an IP rating?
An IP (Ingress Protection) rating determines how well a light fixture is protected from solid objects and moisture. For example, IP44 is suitable for bathroom and outdoors, while IP65 is ideal for wet areas such as showers and steam rooms.
2. How do I choose the right LED colour temperature for my space?
LED colour temperature is measured in Kelvins (K), the lower the number the warmer the light is:

- 2000K-2200K (Super Warm White) – also known as the vintage look, ideal for recreating an olde worlde atmosphere.
-
2700K-3000K (Warm White) – Creates a cozy atmosphere, ideal for living rooms and bedrooms and traditional settings.
-
4000K (Cool White) – Bright and neutral, great for kitchens and bathrooms and gives a contemporary feel.
- 5000K-6500K (Daylight) – Crisp and clear, suitable for offices and commercial spaces.
3. What’s the difference between lumens and watts?
Lumens measure brightness, while watts measure energy consumption. For example, a 7W LED can produce the same brightness as a 60W incandescent bulb but with lower energy usage.
4. How much lighting do I need for a room?
As a general guide, multiply the room’s square footage by the recommended lumens per square foot:
- Living rooms: 10-20 lumens per sq. ft.
- Kitchens: 30-40 lumens per sq. ft.
- Bathrooms: 70-80 lumens per sq. ft.
5. What are the benefits of LED lighting over traditional bulbs?
LEDs last longer, use less energy, and also produce less heat. They are available in various styles and colour temperatures. LED lighting usually costs more to buy than traditional lighting, however it will eventually pay for itself, so to get the fastest return on investment start by replacing traditional bulbs with LED in areas that have the highest usage.
6. What are integrated LED lights.
Integrated LED lights do not use LED bulbs, rather they contain an unremovable LED light source. It’s essential when buying integrated LED lighting that you ensure there is at least a five year guarantee, as once it reaches the end of it’s life you need to replace the whole fitting, which usually entails getting professional help.
7. What is dimmable lighting, and how do I know if my lights are dimmable?
Dimmable lights allow you to adjust brightness levels. Check the product specifications or look for “dimmable” on LED packaging. Ensure your dimmer switch is compatible with modern LED lamps and only use good quality branded lamps when dimming your lights.
Style & Trends
8. Lighting trends for 2025: What’s in style
Warm metallics, such as satin brass (also very effective when mixed with black) are making a comeback. Vintage lighting is still in vogue as are both ostentatious and subtle crystal fittings (which are also now appearing in bathrooms). Expect to see more natural materials, and oversized statement pendants and sculptural fixtures will also be popular.
9. How do I choose the right chandelier size for my dining table?
For dining tables, the chandelier should be about half to two-thirds the width of the table. If your table is round pick a circular or spherical fitting, if it has corners, don’t, unless something else in the room can help you carry off the curves.
10. What are the best lighting solutions for high ceilings?
Consider pendant lights, chandeliers, or recessed lighting with adjustable beams to illuminate large spaces effectively. Usually, the fixture should have at least 7 feet of clearance from the floor, but with high ceilings larger statement pieces can be very effective higher up.
11. How to create a warm and inviting atmosphere with lighting?
Use a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Opt for warm white bulbs and dimmable fixtures to adjust brightness as needed.
Installation & Maintenance
12. Can I install my own lighting, or do I need an electrician?
If you’re not confident installing the lighting yourself we can recommend a good, friendly professional electrician to make your life easier. Just ask for details.
13. How do I clean and maintain my light fixtures?
If you need to clean your light use a soft cloth and mild cleaner or a feather duster for metal and glass fixtures. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage finishes. Dust regularly to maintain brightness. If you have to remove heavy staining from crystal or glass chandeliers we can supply you with a cleaning spray. Simply cover the area of floor underneath with cardboard or newspaper, spray the crystals and watch the sparkle return!
14. What should I consider when choosing outdoor lighting?
Look for IP44 rated lights for durability, motion sensors for security, and warm white bulbs for a welcoming glow. If in exposed windy areas where lights filling with water has been an issue, consider IP65 for better ingress protection. A useful tip in such areas would be to rub Vaseline over the joints of the fitting to further protect it from driving rain. If you live within 5 miles of the coastline then plastic lights would last forever, or we do coastal ranges in metal with 15 year guarantees.
Smart Lighting & Energy Efficiency
15. What is smart lighting, and how does it work?
Smart lighting allows remote control via apps or voice assistants. Features include dimming, colour changes, and automation for convenience and efficiency.
16. How can I make my home lighting more energy-efficient?
Use LED bulbs and incorporate motion sensors or timers to reduce energy waste.
17. Can I use LED bulbs in my existing fittings?
Yes, most LED bulbs fit standard fixtures, but check compatibility, especially with dimmer switches.
