You can detect smoke using an Ionisation or Optical detector or you can detect heat by installing a Heat detector. All respond in a different way to different types of fires so it is probably best to install a combination of all the different types. You should fit at least one smoke detector on each floor of your home

Detector Types

  • Choose, optical smoke detectors for circulation areas such as hallways and landings; they perform best in areas where cigarettes may start slow smouldering fires of furniture or bedding.
  • Ionisation smoke detectors may be best suited for living rooms dining rooms and other general living areas where rapid burning fires are a greater possibility
  • Add Heat detectors to areas such as kitchens and garages for added protection
